The Song Supreme

The Song of Songs which is Solomon’s
Song of Solomon 1:1

I remember my high school yearbook featuring some of my classmates on the “Senior Superlatives” page. Pictured there were those individuals who in their four years of high school had distinguished themselves in some way or another. The Cutest, the Smartest, the Most Athletic, The Most Talented, The Most Talkative, the Most likely to . . .

These individuals were found to be simply the best.

The phrase “the song of songs” expresses a superlative as do the phrases Holy of Holies, King of Kings, Lord of Lords. The superlative holds within this idea: in comparing all that fit into a given category, this one thing, this one person is heads above the rest. All else pales in comparison.

The Holy Spirit in directing Solomon to open with these words is distinguishing this canticle from the other 1000+ songs written by or even written for the king. Of all the songs written this one is the ultimate song!. No other song compares. This is a Song Supreme!

But why? What is it about the Song of Solomon that qualifies it as being unsurpassed?    I believe it is because of what it reveals to us about God’s love. There is something so deeply personal here. It goes beyond the love a Father has for His child. It goes beyond the love of friends. Here we see another aspect of the love that Paul describes as passing all knowledge. Hear the Father speak:

"You ask, My Child, what makes this song, of all the songs that Solomon wrote, the supreme, the greatest, the song above all songs. I tell you it is because this song, more than all others, reveals the depth of My love for you, My beautiful Bride. It reveals My heart concerning the deeply personal relationship I seek with you. Not one solely of Father and child or Redeemer and redeemed. But one of a deep, intimate, abiding love. It speaks of intimate times when I take you, My Bride, into My chamber; it speaks of the secrets and mysteries spoken in those intimate moments alone.

I long for you even more than you long for Me. I want you to experience the real deal of Love. To experience the depths, the width, the height the length of love in Me and know that there is no other that will ever love you with the depth of Love I Am for you. Let My Love flow in and through and out of you, engulfing you, bathing you, soothing you. It is My pure and holy transcendent love I Am that completes you and satisfies you.

As we walk through this relationship be immersed in that love, rest in it, live from it. Love will never fail you. Trust in it more than you trust anything else. There is no fear in Love. There is no fear in Me. There is no failure in Love, for there is no failure in Me. Know Me and Know Love. Then when the counterfeit comes you will not be fooled into accepting it.

Come to know Me now, My Bride, as your Bridegroom. You know Me as Savior. You know Me as Father. You know Me as Redeemer, Deliverer, and Healer. Now come to know Me as Bridegroom and discover a dimension of My love like none you've ever fathomed. As you do, I promise, you will never be the same."

Journey through the Song of Songs

I don’t remember exactly when the Lord gave the Song of Solomon to me (or maybe He gave me to the Song of Solomon. I can’t really be sure). I only know that by early 1990s, I had fallen so deeply in love with the Lord and  I desired to know Him in more intimate ways; I was so desperate for Him. There was a cry in my heart and a hunger in my soul that even now I cannot adequately articulate. I soon realized that this was the wooing of the Holy Spirit.
One day, while browsing in one of my favorite bookstores, I was drawn to a book title: The Song of the Bride. It was really the caption that caught me. Under the author’s name read: “The book that sent her to prison.” It was a commentary on the Song of Solomon by a 16th century French woman who had dared to seek for God outside the tenets of the Catholic Church. She had found God, but she also found much persecution – persecution that led her to imprisonment in the  Bastille. Reading this book changed my perspective on the Christian life, and more specifically my perspective of this God who loves me with such fervency, with such passion. I began to see the ultimate goal of salvation as total union with God.
That was almost twenty years ago, and the “Song” continues to draw me. As the Lord calls us into greater levels of consecration before Him, I feel Him also drawing me back to this magnificent Love Song, calling me to great adventure of the heart. He is calling me to journey once more through the Song of all songs! I invite you to join me on the journey.
For the next few weeks, I will be reading through and “experiencing” the Song of Solomon, and just sharing with you what the Holy Spirit speaks to me. This is not an in-depth study of the book; this is not a verse-by-verse exegesis of the book (even though I will share some necessary information to help us understand some of the verses and the overall theme of the book). This is a journey deep into the loving heart of our Father.
You may have been like I was and avoided the Song of Solomon for a variety of reasons. Let me suggests some things that may help you as we journey through the book together:

     • Read the book all the way through several times. There are only 8 chapters and you could read the entire book in one sitting.
     • Don’t allow yourself to get bogged down with the imagery; don’t try to understand every little detail. Allow the Holy Spirit to highlight passages that He desires to speak to you personally.
     • The book is an allegory. There is a very literal interpretation of the book (love within the context of marriage), but there is a meaning that transcends that of human love and illustrates the love that the Lord has for us personally. Keep that in mind as you read.
     • The Song is a group of songs or poems. Some scholars suggest it is a drama in verse with King Solomon and the Shulamite maiden as its main characters. Noting who is speaking will help you.
     • The Song shows the progression from immature love to mature love, and many scholars and commentators have divided the book in to sections that show that progression. I personally like Watchman Nee’s divisions:
          a. initial love
          b. faltering love
          c. growing love
          d. transforming love
          e. mature love
This progression can also be seen in 3 key verses:
My beloved is mine and I am his. (2:16)
I am my beloved’s and he is mine. (6:3)
I am my beloved’s and his desire is toward me. (7:10)

As you remain open to the Holy Spirit, you will receive much from this book. Press in and glean what He has for you. I know your worship life will be transformed as a result.

Fear Not!

"For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying: "Do not say, 'A conspiracy,' concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread. He will be as a sanctuary…"
Isaiah 8:11-14a

“The underlying current in the world in which you live today is fear – and it is not only a fear that is permeating the “world” but it is grabbing hold of many in My Body as well. They may couch it in other terms, but the bottom line is far too many are beginning to operate from a place of fear rather than a place of faith. That breaks My heart; for, it is in times like these -- perilous and turbulent times -- that I desire to show Myself strong to My people and, thus, to the world.

Hear Me! This is not the time to allow the negative reports that you hear daily to become a part of your thought pattern and, therefore, the framework from which you base your behavior. Now and always you must govern your lives, your actions, your decisions on My word. You hear the words released by media, released by the “experts” and echoed and reechoed by those around you and many are allowing those words to drown out, to overshadow My word. Now is the time more than ever before to know what you know and live it out, walk it out no matter what is going on around you. No matter what the “experts” say. Now is the time more than ever before that My children must be fortified with My Word. It must be a part of you. It must become your necessary food. It must be that which guides you! Be aware of the facts, don’t ignore the facts, but don’t allow the facts to become stronger in you than My truth of My Word! The words I speak are truth; they are spirit and they are life!

Now is the time that I will show Myself strong to those who will stand on the reality and truth of My Word. I Am all that I Am. Allow Me to show Myself mighty in your life for all to see. It will become a testimony of My greatness, a testimony of My faithfulness, a testimony of My love and it will cause others to seek Me as they watch you let Me do what I do best -- simply be I Am!

I say to you as I said to Isaiah: Do not say what the people around you say and do not fear what those around you fear. Make Me your fear. Fear is nothing more than placing respect and reverence in something or someone. So whom shall you fear? In whom shall you place your reverence and respect in this time of shaking? Will you reverence the Dow Jones? Will you reverence the negative reports? Will you reverence the doctor’s reports? Will you reverence CNN? Will you reverence the government? Or will you reverence Me, the Sovereign Lord? Make Me your fear! For as you make Me your fear, I have promised to be as a sanctuary to you. A sanctuary is a place of safety and refuge. A sanctuary is a place of peace, protection and provision. What touches those outside the sanctuary cannot touch those within it. I will be as a sanctuary, if you truly place your faith in Me.

Yes, just as I promised in My word, I Am shaking all that can be shaken. I Am shaking heaven; I Am shaking earth. I Am shaking within and I Am shaking without. Those who are truly Mine, who have anchored themselves in Me and in My word are those who shall remain standing strong when the shaking is over.

"For thus says the Lord of hosts: 'Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,' says the Lord of hosts. 'The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,' says the Lord of hosts. 'The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,' says the Lord of hosts. 'And in this place I will give peace,' says the Lord of hosts." (Haggai 2:6-9)

Know this: as the shaking continues many will come to you – My Church—for answers that the world systems and false religions have not been able to provide. They will come in droves, knocking at your doors in search of answers, in search of truth. You have the answer. You are the answer. You are the hope they need – Christ in you is truly the hope of glory for the world.
So I call you now to a place of prayer that presses in like never before. I call you now to a place of stillness at My feet where I will release strategies, wisdom and answers. I call you now to hear Me more clearly than ever; for, through you, My Body, I will release the answers needed. I call you now to be Joseph to the world’s pharaoh. And as you release those answers, as you put My strategies into action, as you walk out by faith that which I Am speaking, many shall be saved and the world will know that I Am with you. Many shall come into My kingdom as a result. Just fear not and trust Me.”

See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, "Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven." Now this, "Yet once more," indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire. Word of the Lord

The following prophetic word was delivered at Heirs Covenant Church of Cincinnati by Apostle John W. Stevenson.  Be blessed!

“Seek Me with all your heart and you will find Me, says the Lord. For these are days in which I’m drawing and I’m calling you into new places. And there’s some unfamiliar ground that you will have to walk upon. But I will lead you and I will guide you, says the Lord. For I have purposed to bring you into a new place, a different place in Me. It will impact your surroundings and things will begin to look very different. Know that it is Me that is shifting and that is changing and that is rearranging.

For it’s in this hour and in this season that I Am calling My church to a new place. I have suffered long and waited patiently, and now I Am moving quickly, says the Lord. For there is much that weighs in the balance before the end of time and all that are Mine will be Mine, says the Lord.

And so I Am moving swiftly throughout the earth, and you will hear and you will see things and you will wonder, ‘What is this?’ and ‘Why is this?’ But know that I Am moving, and when I move the earth moves.

For I have purposed to establish My kingdom in the earth in the way that I have intended. Think it not strange the places where you will find yourself. Be willing to walk through the seasons of inconvenience for My sake and for My glory. Be willing to stand in face of opposition, knowing that I Am your shield and your buckler. I have you. No man can hurt you. You’re in My hands.

I Am shifting and those who hear Me know that I Am shifting, and they are shifting with Me. It is My desire that My body, My whole body, My church , My whole church, align itself with that which I Am doing in these days.

What has been common will be common no more. What has been familiar will be part of your distant past. I Am releasing My grace for you to step into the places where I Am calling you today, says the Lord. I Am setting you free from worries and cares. I Am setting you free from bondages and hindrances that you would no more be encumbered. But you must also lay aside every weight and sin; for, together you and I will accomplish great things, says the Lord.

I have purposed to pour out My glory in the earth like never before. My glory will break forth from vessels that have been tried and tested, and through great testing, have allowed Me to become so large in them that now it’s time to come forth and break forth.

You must trust Me, says the Lord. You must trust Me with everything –yes, even your life. I have not failed you and I will not fail you. My word is everlasting and everything that I have spoken will come to pass. Everything that I have written is true.

Remain faithful! Remain faithful! Do not allow yourself to become so wearied that you have little time for Me. Remain faithful! For as you set aside the time, I will renew your strength. I will refresh you. I will strengthen you. But you must remain faithful. My word is sure; My covenant is eternal. I hold up My end; I need you to do the same.

The world as you know it is moving into yet more perilous times. Men’s hearts will faint, but you who know Me will stand. And I will bless you and I will strengthen you and I will protect you. You will weather the things that seemingly would cause other men to fall. You will be the light and you will be the salt that I have said you would be in the earth.

It is time now for you to arise out of your slumber and out of your sleep. It’s time now for you to arise out of your complacency and your apathy. It’s time for you to arise out of the cares that you allow to overtake you and come to the place that I have established for you. For it is a high place in Me, says the Lord. It is a place where the enemy cannot get to. It is a place where My power is greater than you’ve ever known. It is a place where you will see all that I have in store. It is your place of peace. It is a place of surrender; it’s a place of rest.

Come with Me, says the Lord. For time is running out; the days are shorter than you think. The time you thought you once had has now been compressed. I’m doing a quick work. I’m doing a quick work. Allow Me to do a quick work in you so that all that I have set before you to do will be accomplished, and when you stand before Me, you will hear Me say, ‘Well done!”

Up Close and Personal

One of the most cherished memories that I have of my mother was actually the day before she went home to be with the Lord. I climbed in the hospital bed with her and began singing softly in her ear:

Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me
Yes, Jesus loves me…

She looked at me as I sang. Tired and weak as she was, I saw a glint in her eye, a look of recognition. She opened her mouth and in the most delicate and faint voice, she joined in "The Bible tells me so."

It was then that I understood Paul’s words in Romans 8:38,39 in a way I hadn’t before: “I'm absolutely convinced that nothing - nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable - absolutely nothing can get between us and God's love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us” (The Message). One truth had remained constant throughout my mother’s 88 years of life – through the joys and disappointments, through the wins and losses, through both fear and faith, through the laughter and tears, through Alzheimer’s Disease, through stroke -- one truth had kept her and now was about to usher her into the eternal presence of the God. Though that thief, dementia, had robbed her of many memories, it had not been able to snatch from her one thing: the reality of the eternal, inflamed, unconditional love of God.

The Love of God goes beyond our human understanding. Many of us grapple with it, finding it almost too good to be true. Too often we look at ourselves through our human eyes and question why God would or even could love us as He does. Too often we don’t fully embrace His love. Even worse, we don't allow that Love to fully embrace us. But it is His love that is our life source.

God is love (1 John 3:8). Love is the very motivation of all He does. It was at the heart of the very first, “Let there be…” It is the very motivation behind creation. It was Love that breathed into man and made him a living soul. Love is the motivation behind redemption. Love is the story from Genesis to Revelation. It is Love that calls us back to original purpose. It is Love that leads us home.

And today it is Love that will keep you, provide for you, comfort you, protect you, guide you, hold you. Today Love will heal the hurts, speak wisdom, pour out great grace, uplift , shelter you under its shadow. In the darkest places, in the empty, desolate places, in the lonely places, in the good, in the bad Love is there today; for nothing shall separate you from His Love.

Open up and allow the Love of God to embrace you today as never before. Be consciously aware of His presence wherever you find yourself today. Let His Love be all that you need, fulfilling and satisfying every desire It's His heart's desire to demonstrate to you His love today -- up close and personal.
